Shuji Sushi: 250 Flinders Lane, Melbourne CBD

All I can say to myself is WHY WHY WHY. Why did I decide to have linner here. What a fail. But hey at least now I can warn other people to not make the same foolish decision like me.

Shuji Sushi flirted with me, with its cozy appearance from the outside. Dammit, I fell for it. I could’ve crossed the little alley, straight to Degraves and receive better (not to mention hot) actions but no! Somehow I willingly surrendered myself into the trap! I’m such a sucker for Japanese food. Maybe deep down I wanted to discover more hidden jap joints, and I put a little faith in this one. Note to self: just because it’s in an alley, doesn’t mean the eatery will be one of those rare food cults that serves awesome foodgasm-worthy cuisines!!

Anyways. They had that usual sushi, sashimi platters and rolls. I skimmed through their prices - oh my, they charge slighty extra than Sushi Sushi! “How dare you! 30 cents are such a big difference for me!”, I thought to myself. Carrying on… they also have that hot food thingy, with fried rice and different side dishes, laaaaame. (Oh and I totes saw a couple getting some hot foods from there, later on, and they complained over it - yes, of course I was eavesdropping, what else is there to do, you moron - and they didn’t manage to finish even half of it)

I should’ve stepped out at that moment but the menu board caught my eyes. They had bento boxes! And they look big, full, and yummy. On $10.90 and a crying stomach, I rushed and ignored my doubts, I ordered that shit. Shitbox, it should’ve been called! When it arrived I was (no shit) surprised. I fucking counted the sliced beef teriyaki, they only gave me about 5 small ones, what the fok. And about 3 pieces of chicken. One salmon and prawn sushi, and two ‘crap’/crab rolls. And 2 random spring rolls, with failgetables. I should’ve known better. I was so dissapointed with myself. Portion was small and it’s definitely not worth $10! Wait, it was $10.90! Blah!

Okay, I just re-read what I’ve written and it sounds horrible, gees, I’m sorry Shuji Sushi. It wasn’t the WORST bento, it was just… not worth it, yeah that’s it. Your beef teriyaki was nice and standard, I like the use of sliced zucchini in it, fine, I’ll give you that. Your spring rolls were terrible and so not appropriate, this is a fricking bento box, not a cross-nation JapChina lovechildbox! Chicken was cold, lacking sauce too. At least you gave me a decent salmon sushi, nice and thick, I think it was the only decent part of the bento.

I mean, it’s eatable, sure. It didn’t taste horrible, but again, and again, it’s definitely not worth it. I should stop being such a sucker for Japanese food. Gosh.

Places like Hoka-Hoka Bento from Indonesia.. seriously.. we desperately need you here in Melbourne, for supercheap awesome takeaway yum yums. Make it nice and fast, kick these wannabe bento places in their fake/semi-jap arse.
